You know what they say… A clean space is a clear mind.

Numerous studies have shown that students perform better in clean, organised spaces, as a clutter-free environment promotes focus and concentration.

This is why it’s so important, especially if you’re a uni student working towards your degree, to keep your accommodation neat and tidy.

But when you only have limited space, it’s hard to keep it organised, and it gets messy very quickly.

Not to worry though, in this article, our experts at The Storage Team share their top tips for keeping your accommodation clean and organised, so that all your last-minute assignment writing and late-night cramming sessions can run smoothly.

Invest in dual-purpose items

Dual-purpose, or multi-functional, furniture is an excellent investment for students living in halls or shared housing, as it reduces the need for multiple items and frees up space for other essentials.

From storage ottomans that can be used as additional seating, to tables that double as chairs, there are many different options available to suit your space and style preferences.

Utilise under-bed storage

If you’re lucky enough to have an ottoman bed in your student accommodation, chances are you’re already making good use of the under-bed storage space it provides.

However, if you just have the bog-standard bed found in most student halls, you’ll need to get creative with the way you use the space underneath for storage.

Invest in a couple of sturdy plastic boxes, that can slide easily in and out from under your bed, to keep items like shoes, seasonal clothing, towels, and whatever else you can think of!

Opt for over-the-door storage solutions

From hangers that are perfect for coats and dressing gowns, to pocket and shelf organisers for shoes, toiletries, and electronics, over-the-door storage is great for organising items, freeing up space, and ensuring quick, easy access to your belongings.

And the best part is, they (and their contents!) can easily move with you when you eventually move out of student halls and into a shared house or other type of accommodation.

Make good use of wall space

Typically, you’ll find that you have more wall space than floor space in your student accommodation. So why not make the most of it?

Most university accommodations prohibit students from drilling into walls, which most would think means shelves and hooks are off the cards.

Luckily, though, there are workaround alternatives that don’t cause any structural damage and are sure to keep landlords happy…removable shelves and hooks!

Rather than drilling holes and using nails and screws, you can attach floating shelves to your wall using heavy-duty adhesive strips or mounting tape.

Just make sure the fixing you choose can support the weight of the shelf and the items you plan to put on it - be it books, plants, toiletries, or whatever else.

Consider student self-storage

If you’ve optimised your space to the max, and you’re still struggling to find a home for certain items, why not put them in a storage unit?
