To keep, or not to keep?

It’s the burning question when decluttering your wardrobe and a tidy, organised space is the goal.

Not only does it make it easier to see everything you have at a glance but it also makes putting outfits together a breeze.

Decluttering is easier said than done, though, and you need to be ruthless with what you keep and what you toss or donate. Yes, that means finally parting ways with the decades-old band t-shirt and skinny jeans from your teen years.

If you’re planning a big wardrobe clearout, our experts at The Storage Team have compiled their top tips and tricks in this guide to help you get the job done!

Remove everything

The first step is taking everything out of your wardrobe.

Remove all clothes, shoes, accessories, and anything else stored in your wardrobe, and set it aside to give yourself a clean slate to work with.

So, set an hour or two aside and get stuck in!

Work in categories

When taking everything out of your wardrobe, try to organise your clothes and accessories by type (tops, bottoms, dresses, etc) or by season.

Working in sections will make the job feel much more manageable and make it easier for you to see what you have, what you want to keep, and what you should probably get rid of.

Try on and assess

What better way to determine what to keep and what to sell or donate than with a fashion show?

Trying everything on will help you see what still fits, what still suits your style, and what you truly enjoy wearing.

If you don’t have time for the private catwalk, ask yourself the following questions to help you decide:

  • Do I wear it?

  • Does it fit well?

  • Is it still in good condition?

  • Does it fit my current style?

  • Would I buy it again?

If you answer no to all of these questions, consider letting the item go.

To sell, to donate, or to bin it?

Now you’ve been through all your clothes and (hopefully) determined what you’re keeping, it’s time to sort what’s left into piles (yes, more piles!).

This includes:

  • To sell – Any items that you don’t want that are still in excellent condition can be sold. Platforms like Vinted and Depop are great for listing unwanted items, and they’re sure to sell in no time!

  • To donate – Clothes that are still in good condition can be donated to charity.

  • To throw away – Any items that have holes, are stained, or are otherwise no longer wearable should be thrown away.

Move seasonal clothing and accessories into storage

If you don’t have enough storage space at home for seasonal clothing items and accessories when they’re not needed, you should consider moving them into a storage unit.

Here at The Storage Team, we have a range of different-sized domestic storage units available to rent that are perfect for storing out-of-season clothes.

With flexible, affordable contracts available, you can store your clothes for as little or as long as you need to and access everything as and when you need.
